The Mazda CX-5 has been one of Malaysia's favourite premium-leaning family SUVs for years, and the all-new third-generation model launched on 8 October 2026 is the biggest change the nameplate has seen. It is larger, more technology-heavy and, for the first time in a while, comes as a single fully imported (CBU) variant from Japan. Here is what you need to know before you book one.
2026 Mazda CX-5 Price in Malaysia
| Variant | OTR Price (without insurance) |
|---|---|
| 2.5G High (without sunroof) | RM168,510.40 |
| 2.5G High (with panoramic sunroof) | RM171,510.40 |
That makes the new car roughly RM3,550 to RM6,550 more than the outgoing second-generation 2.5G 2WD High, which is RM164,960.40. For the extra money you get a bigger body, a bigger screen and a longer equipment list.
Design and Size
The new CX-5 measures 4,690 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,695 mm tall, with a 2,815 mm wheelbase. Compared with the previous generation, that is 115 mm longer overall and the wheelbase has grown by the same amount. The practical benefit is obvious in the back seat, where knee room should improve noticeably, and the 40:20:40 split-folding rear bench keeps long loads flexible. Mazda keeps its restrained Kodo-inspired look, with LED lighting, 19-inch black metallic wheels, roof rails and a powered tailgate.
Engine and Performance
Power comes from a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G four-cylinder producing 185 hp and 257 Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. There is no hybrid system in Malaysian trim. On paper the output is slightly below the old car's 192 hp, but torque is nearly identical and the top speed is quoted at 187 km/h. Mazda also fits brake-by-wire and G-Vectoring Control Plus, which smooths the car's behaviour in corners. Expect a calm, refined drive rather than a sporty one, which suits the family-SUV brief.
Interior and Technology
The cabin is where the generation change is most visible. A 12.9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto sits at the centre, backed by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display and a 12-speaker Bose sound system. Mazda has reduced physical controls to make way for the screen, which some owners will dislike, but the dual-zone climate control and ventilated, powered front seats with driver memory add real everyday comfort. Sport tan leather, ambient lighting and a wireless charger complete a premium-feeling package.
Safety and ADAS
Seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag, are standard, along with stability control, hill launch assist, hill descent control and rear ISOFIX anchors. The driver-assistance suite is comprehensive: Radar Cruise Control, front and rear Smart Brake Support (AEB), blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, emergency lane keeping, front and rear cross traffic alert, vehicle exit warning, driver attention alert and a 360-degree camera with see-through view. Adaptive LED headlamps help at night.
Warranty and Ownership
Mazda offers a five-year, 100,000 km warranty and a free service package covering parts, lubricants and labour, which softens the long-term running costs of a CBU Japanese import.
Pros and Cons
- Pros: larger cabin, long equipment list, strong ADAS suite, premium interior, free service package
- Cons: no hybrid or turbo option, fewer physical buttons, only one variant, price rise over the previous model
Verdict
At just under RM172,000, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 targets buyers who want a polished, well-equipped SUV without stepping up to a luxury badge. It is not the quickest or the most efficient option in its class, but the space, refinement and safety kit make a convincing case. If you value cabin quality and a calm drive, put it on your shortlist.
