Porsche has launched the all-electric Cayenne in Malaysia, and the numbers are extraordinary. Prices start at RM699,000 nett before options, making it a serious but expensive proposition.

Performance

All variants have dual-motor all-wheel drive. The base car makes 408 PS and 835 Nm (442 PS with launch control) and reaches 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The S raises output to 544 PS and 1,080 Nm (666 PS with launch control) with a 3.8-second sprint. The Turbo is the headline act: 857 PS and 1,500 Nm, or 1,156 PS with launch control, reaching 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and 200 km/h in 7.4 seconds, with a 260 km/h top speed. Regenerative braking can recover up to 600 kW.

Battery, Range and Charging

A 113 kWh NMC battery on an 800V architecture provides WLTP ranges from 624 km to 669 km, depending on the variant and body style; the Cayenne S Coupe is the longest at 669 km. DC charging is up to 390 kW, taking 10% to 80% in under 16 minutes, one of the fastest in the world. AC charging is 11 kW as standard, with 22 kW optional, and 11 kW wireless charging is available ex-factory, which is a rare luxury.

Chassis and Driving

Air suspension with PASM adaptive dampers is standard. Options include Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, rear-wheel steering up to 5 degrees, carbon ceramic brakes and Porsche Active Ride. The suspension can raise the ground clearance to 245 mm, and an off-road package is offered, with a 550 mm wading depth. Aerodynamics are impressive too: a drag coefficient of 0.25 for the SUV and 0.23 for the Coupe, which helps efficiency.

Interior and Technology

The cabin features a 14.25-inch curved OLED instrument display, an optional 14.9-inch passenger display, the Flow Display infotainment system and an augmented-reality head-up display with an 87-inch effective size. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a Qi wireless charging pad are included. Wheels range from 20 to 22 inches.

Practicality

For a performance car, this is a practical one. The wheelbase is 3,023 mm, and the SUV has a 781-litre boot (584 litres for the Coupe) plus a 90-litre front boot. Rear passengers should have plenty of space.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros: astonishing performance, very fast charging, long range, optional wireless charging, genuine practicality, striking technology
  • Cons: very high price once options are added, large and heavy, charging infrastructure for 390 kW is limited in Malaysia

Verdict

The Cayenne Electric proves that a family SUV can also be a supercar rival. Most buyers will find the base or S more than fast enough, while the Turbo is for those who want the ultimate statement. At RM699,000 and above, it is a luxury purchase, but few cars at any price offer this blend of speed, range and usability.
