2026 Proton S70 MC2 NA Review: Lite and Prime from RM59,800

Proton has widened the S70 range with a naturally aspirated version, launched on 22 September 2026 as the S70 MC2 NA. It slots neatly between the cheaper Saga and the turbocharged S70, giving buyers who want a bigger sedan a much lower entry price. Two variants, Lite and Prime, start from RM59,800 on-the-road before rebates.

PrimeRM62,800RM59,800

For context, the Saga costs between RM38,990 and RM49,990 and the turbocharged S70 between RM74,800 and RM94,800, so the NA models fill a clear gap.

Engine and Gearbox

Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated, port-injected four-cylinder, borrowed from the Saga, making 120 PS at 6,100 rpm and 150 Nm between 4,000 and 5,000 rpm. It is paired with a CVT with a torque converter, which should feel smoother off the line than a conventional belt-only CVT. Proton says the powertrain was validated over more than 5,400 dyno hours and 412,000 km of local road testing, which is reassuring for buyers wary of new combinations.

Features: Lite vs Prime

The Lite is simple but not stingy. It has halogen headlights, 16-inch alloys, an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a reverse camera and sensors, keyless entry with remote engine start, push-button start and rear USB-A and USB-C ports. Seats are manual fabric.

The Prime adds automatic LED headlights, auto-folding mirrors, 17-inch wheels, single-zone automatic air-conditioning, faux leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and front parking sensors. For just RM3,000 more, that is a worthwhile list of comforts.

Safety: A Clear Limitation

Both variants carry six airbags and stability control, plus blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, rear collision warning, door opening warning and a rear seat reminder. However, there are no driver assistance features at all, which means no autonomous emergency braking. For some buyers, particularly those who do long highway drives, that will be a deciding factor, and the turbo S70 remains the better option if ADAS matters.

Ownership Costs and Financing

Proton offers a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty and six free labour services. Nine-year financing starts from 2.35% per annum, with RM2,000 overtrade support. Insurance perks include special perils and windscreen cover, passenger personal accident cover up to RM15,000 per person and flood relief up to RM2,000. These extras reduce the real cost of ownership.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros: low price for a C-segment sedan, proven Saga engine, wireless smartphone mirroring, strong warranty and financing deals, six airbags
  • Cons: no AEB or other ADAS, modest 120 PS output, Lite uses halogen lamps and analogue gauges

Verdict

The S70 NA is a value play. At roughly RM60,000 after rebate, the Prime delivers a well-equipped, spacious sedan with a long warranty. If you can live without AEB, it is among the cheapest ways to get a bigger, more upmarket-looking car. If you want active safety, budget more for the turbo model.
