2026 Volkswagen Tayron R-Line Malaysia Review: 265 PS 7-Seater from RM238,574

The Volkswagen Tayron replaces the Tiguan Allspace as VW's seven-seat family SUV in Malaysia. Assembled locally (CKD) in Pekan, Pahang, it comes in two variants, and the new top-spec R-Line, priced at RM238,574 on-the-road without insurance, brings a powerful 2.0 TSI engine, all-wheel drive and a long list of luxuries.

Driving and Performance

The R-Line is considerably quicker than the Elegance, with 265 PS and 400 Nm taking it to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. The 4Motion all-wheel drive improves traction and confidence. The price of that performance is higher fuel consumption at 8.5 L/100 km. The Elegance is more economical at 6.1 L/100 km, helped by its 48V mild hybrid system, but it is notably slower.

Interior and Features

Both variants share a lavish list: Varenna leather, 30-colour ambient lighting, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, triple-zone climate control, dual wireless charging pads and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Front seats offer memory, heating, ventilation, massage and 12-way power adjustment. The R-Line adds IQ.Light matrix LED headlamps, dynamic taillight signals, a head-up display, an around-view monitor and a bigger 15-inch Discover Pro Max screen. The seven seats are arranged 2-3-2, with a sliding and folding second row.

Safety

All Tayrons have nine airbags, ESC, driver monitoring and tyre pressure monitoring. The IQ.Drive ADAS suite includes adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, Front Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Side Assist with rear traffic alert, lane centring, Emergency Assist and Park Assist Plus. It is one of the most comprehensive suites in the segment.

Warranty

The standard warranty is two years with unlimited mileage plus five years of roadside assistance. Buyers should seriously consider the VAP, which extends coverage to five years.

How It Compares

In the seven-seat SUV market the Tayron R-Line competes with premium-leaning rivals that are often priced much higher once fully optioned. Its main advantage is that almost everything is already standard, from massage seats to the head-up display and matrix LED headlamps, so there is little to add at the dealership. Anyone who mostly drives alone or with a small family may find the Elegance's 1.5 TSI mild hybrid more than adequate, and it saves nearly RM48,000 up front. Family buyers who regularly use the third row should note that it is best suited to children or short trips.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros: strong performance, AWD, luxurious features, nine airbags, full ADAS, seven seats
  • Cons: RM48,000 more than Elegance, thirsty 2.0 engine, short standard warranty without VAP

Verdict

The Tayron R-Line is a well-rounded premium family SUV for buyers who want power, space and technology. The Elegance is more affordable and economical, but the R-Line is the one that feels special. Add the VAP for peace of mind.
