Volvo EX30 Cross Country Malaysia Review: 428 PS AWD EV at RM218,888

Volvo's smallest electric SUV has gained an adventurous sibling. The EX30 Cross Country, launched in Malaysia on 15 September 2026, adds a taller stance, off-road styling and the most powerful drivetrain in the local EX30 range. It costs RM218,888 on-the-road without insurance.

That is RM10,000 less than the discontinued EX30 Ultra Twin Performance, so Volvo has effectively made the dual-motor car cheaper. The first 100 buyers receive a launch offer worth about RM21,800, including a RM12,000 cash rebate, a Volvo Wallbox, a load carrier and a roof basket.

Performance

This is the only dual-motor variant in Malaysia's EX30 line-up, producing 428 PS and 543 Nm. Volvo quotes 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, though top speed is limited to 180 km/h. For a compact crossover, it is explosive, and the all-wheel drive helps put the power down in wet Malaysian conditions.

Battery, Range and Charging

A 69 kWh (65 kWh usable) NMC battery provides up to 437 km of WLTP range. DC fast charging at up to 175 kW takes 10% to 80% in about 27 minutes, and 11 kW AC charging takes around eight hours for a full charge. The battery carries an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty.

Off-Road Styling

The Cross Country adds 19 mm of ride height, 19-inch wheels wearing 235/50 tyres, skid plates and blackened front and rear sections. The changes are mostly cosmetic and the car is not a serious off-roader, but it does look the part and the extra clearance helps on rough roads and flood-prone streets. Colours are Crystal White, Vapour Grey and Cloud Blue, with an Indigo interior.

Interior and Features

The cabin follows Volvo's minimalist approach. Standard equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio, powered front seats, two-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, built-in Google services and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional extras include a roof basket, rubber overmats priced at RM613 and a boot mat at RM840.

Safety

The source launch information does not list the specific safety equipment, but Volvo's reputation for safety is well established. Prospective buyers should ask the dealer for the full ADAS and airbag specification before committing.

Warranty

The vehicle comes with a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

Ownership Tips

Because the EX30 Cross Country is a compact premium EV, think carefully about where you will charge it. A home wallbox, which is included in the launch offer for the first 100 buyers, makes the 11 kW AC speed far more useful, since the car can refill overnight. Check your condominium's rules on charger installation before you book, and compare insurance quotes, as performance EVs can attract higher premiums than their petrol equivalents.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros: huge performance, AWD, priced below the model it replaces, premium audio and sunroof, strong launch offer
  • Cons: modest 437 km range, tight rear space, price is high for a compact SUV, off-road ability is mostly visual

Verdict

The EX30 Cross Country is a stylish, quick and well-equipped premium EV. If you want something compact, fast and safe-feeling with Scandinavian design, it is a charming choice, especially while the launch rebate is available. If outright range or value is your priority, there are cheaper EVs, but few match its badge appeal.
